As a Women in Tech, Being Combative is a Learned Behavior

*This is the founder story of an NFT enabled community project called Neo Punk Girl.

She was one of 8% of female population at her high school as well as KAIST, the top engineering college in Korea. She was one of the first women CEOs in Korea in her 20’s, raised 1.6 million USD from Samsung and sold it to Edutopia, Inc. Her upbringing, the environment, education, and media made her fight like a warrior as if she is at war. Being a victim of her own life, she didn’t know it’s her choice. The belief indeed is the operating system of the mind, that drives thinking and behavior. She left Korea, one of the most conservative countries for NYC in 2006 to be free. She had so much fun creating art installations at ITP, Tisch NYU.

Damn, wherever she goes, the demon inside follows. When she moved to San Francisco in 2008, she figured she had to be a warrior to survive in the startup world when the truth is that she brings so much to the table by bringing what’s real in her. Unfortunately, she trained herself stronger and acted like a man.

Numbing Herself in the Game Industry

She always loved casual games, founded a mobile gaming studio called YayNinjas, which saw 3 million downloads in 2 months reaching Top Grossing №45 on iOS. She also devised a GTM strategy for the $3B franchise, and managed a new mobile game at NCSOFT leading 100 people development team. She has led teams to release and manage over 6 titles, 3 of them stayed above Top Grossing №100 in the US most of their lifetime. Often times, she was the only female in board rooms and business reviews. She ignored sexually discriminating, nasty comments at work saying it’s part of the game. She thought she felt home in the male centric environment just like the high school and the college. She was numbing herself. She was playing her role to fit in. Then she couldn’t do it anymore. After the divorce in 2015, her journey started to understand “ why am I not happy?”

The Journey to be Fully Oneself

She met therapists, coaches, learned how to just “hang out” with time and make friends with no reason. When she least expected, good things happened. She got married to the love of her life in 2021. Her latest day-long psilocybin journey in Jan 2022 really opened her up to meet the scared, confused and lost little girl in her. That little girl has been doing everything to be loved. Since she continuously seeking external approval, nothing was enough. she asked, “what do I do if I love myself? If I stop seeking external approval, what would I do?”

It’s a daily practice. She is connecting with herself every morning, says yes to her feelings and stand up for herself. It’s not in a combative form. It is coming from love. Nothing is perfect. It’s a process.

Do it with love. Do it with love. She says to herself everyday.

Life as a Playground

The essence of her life story comes in a form of play, a community to have fun and support each other. She believes that humor is a best teacher.

Web3 fascinates her because we can build the world with our own worldview. It’s the world that doesn’t exist in the physical world. It excites her because everyone is a child of the universe. A child of the mother earth before anything. Nationality, last name, the home town don’t matter. Imagine the world where everybody wins with kindness and love. It’s the Neo Punk Girl world.
